Business transactions can be deceptively complex. What often appears simple on the outside can be incredibly complex on the inside and as not all businesses are the same, no single approach is right for every situation.
Obtaining commercially savvy legal advice BEFORE you venture off into new projects will identify potential risks before they become actual problems. While the complex can be simplified with a bit of know-how, without proper guidance this is where most businesses get into trouble before they know it. I am a firm believer in the saying ‘prevention is better than cure’ (although, Slee Anderson & Pidgeon does have a litigation department that can help if you get your business transactions off on the wrong foot).
What I can now really enjoy about being a lawyer is being able to provide my clients with the benefit of 38 years’ experience in complex commercial legal transactions. While there will always be some legal issues I haven’t seen or dealt with before, I have seen or dealt with a vast range of them and I know where most of the traps exist and the benefits that can be obtained by doing things legally smart.
My career in commercial law began in 1979 with the prestigious Western Australian legal firm Parker & Parker (now merged with Herbert Smith Freehills), working on major property developments and mining transactions including, by way of example, the redevelopment of the Garden City Shopping Centre for the AMP Society and acting for a broad spectrum of clients from some of the conservative big four banks to some of the more colourful companies of the 1980’s such as the Bond Group…all good experience.
My experience in assisting developing and well established businesses protect themselves against both the visible and the hidden dangers of operating in today’s modern marketspace has taught me many things, most notably, not only how to keep my clients on the ball, but how to get them in front of the ball, and stay there.
